Correcting Jaw Irregularities for Function and Aesthetics
What is Jaw Surgery?
Orthognathic
(jaw) surgery is a corrective surgical procedure performed to fix congenital or
acquired deformities of the upper or lower jaw. It aims to improve both aesthetic appearance and functional abilities such as
chewing, speaking, and breathing.
This
surgery may be recommended if you experience:
- Difficulty chewing or biting food
- A recessed or protruding upper or lower jaw
- Facial asymmetry or deformities
- Difficulty closing your lips naturally
- Obstructive sleep apnea
- Jaw misalignment or bite problems
How is Jaw Surgery Performed?
After
a detailed clinical and radiographic evaluation, your surgeon will decide
whether single-jaw (lower or upper) or double-jaw surgery is needed. A
customized treatment plan is then created based on your specific condition.
General Steps of the Treatment Process:
- Imaging and Diagnosis: Jaw X-rays and dental models are taken to evaluate the structure and alignment of your jaws and teeth.
- Surgical Planning: A personalized surgical plan is developed in collaboration with orthodontists, often as part of a larger treatment including braces.
- Surgery Under General Anesthesia: The surgery is performed in a hospital setting under general anesthesia.
- Jawbone Repositioning: The surgeon cuts and repositions the jawbone. In some cases, bone may be removed or added.
- Fixation: The new jaw position is stabilized using surgical plates, screws, or wires as needed.
- Scar-Free Recovery: All surgical incisions are made inside the mouth, so there are no visible facial scars.
🕒 Recovery and Results
- Hospital stay: 1–3 days
- Healing time: Several weeks to a few months
- Final results: Fully visible once swelling subsides and orthodontic treatment is complete
Orthognathic
surgery not only enhances facial balance and function but also significantly improves
confidence and quality of life.
